Paris: John Christoforou, 1960s

Each of the four Christmas Cards signed by John and Ruth Christoforou. John Christoforou (1921-1014) was an expressionistic figure painter on a heroic scale. Vivid colours and dynamic blacks were his hallmark. Born in London to Greek parents. He joined the RAF in 1941 and served 5 years first as a navigator and laterly with a squadron of flying boats responsible for rescuing airmen at sea. The memory of retrieving drowned colleagues lived with him and influenced his painting for the rest of his life. In 1956 he set up his studio in Shepherd’s Bush and married Ruth Fox. Soon thereafter he and his wife moved to Paris and remained there for the rest of his life. He was given several Gallery shows at Rive Gauche and in 1965 he won the International Association of Art Critic’s Prize in London. His work was particularly popular in the Nordic countries. His work is held in may public and private collections including the Tate Gallery. Very good to near fine condition.
