Newtown: Gregynog Press, 1931.
Translated out of Frensshe in to Englisshe by: William Caxton with engravings on wood by Agnes Miller Parker. Number 51 of 225 (250) copies hand-set in Bembo type and printed on Barcham Green hand-made paper. 12 X 8.75 ins. (8)146 (2) pp. Full bound in Welsh natural sheepskin tanned locally. Spine titling blocked in black. Edges untrimmed. Signed on paste-down of lower cover turn-in GREGYNOG PRESS BINDERY. This copy, which belonged to Allen Freer, has been rebound to replicate the original in every detail. Title page and 36 wood engravings by Agnes Miller Parker and numerous wood engraved pictorial initials by William McCance. “The illustration of Esope was the first full flowering of Miller Parker’s work and these astonishing examples of the wood engraver’s art have evoked worldwide admiration” (“Agnes Miller Parker Wood Engravings: The Story of a Remarkable Book” by Ian Rogerson, Gwasg Gregynog, 1996). Bookplates of Pamela Lister and Allen Freer on front paste-down. Held in a collector’s drop-back box with Jemma Lewis marbled paper interior. A fine copy of the most decorated of Gregynog titles with the very delicate Welsh sheepskin covers in fine condition. This is a rarity as the natural Welsh sheepskin is invariably the worse for wear.
