Set in Ptolemy type and printed on Batchelor paper in red (marginal notes) and black with initials and paragraph delineations hand-painted in blue by Graily Hewitt and his assistants. 10 X 7 ins. iv, 163 pp. Quarter vellum with tips and peacock-green paper covered boards. Gilt spine titling and gilt device designed by the artist on upper cover. Embellished with 29 wood engravings, 4 full page, by Gwen Raverat. These are considered to be Gwen Raverat’s finest book illustrations and represent, in Colin Franklin’s words, “the only worthwhile original illustrations in an Ashendene book”.
